March 5, 2025 – Oakville North–Burlington
In response to an increase in the frequency and severity of hate motivated threats targeting the 2SLGBTQI+ community in Canada, the Standing Committee on the Status of Women (FEWO) adopted a motion to pursue a study on the topic of Hate Motivated Violence Targeting the 2SLGBTQI+ Community.
During my time as a member of the Committee and over the four meetings held on this study between 4-16 December, 2024, the Committee heard from 19 witnesses and received 10 written submissions on this study. As a result of the prorogation of Parliament on January 6, 2025, ongoing and incomplete work of Parliament's Standing Committees, including this important study, were terminated.
Given the importance of the subject matter and the pressing need for the testimony to be shared with the public and relevant stakeholders, my office is releasing a summary report to document the work undertaken and the critical testimony heard by the Committee on this study. This report provides a detailed overview of:
Among the findings summarized, this report outlined how quickly hate-filled disinformation can be spread online across borders, how the anti-gender movement posses a threat to national security, how anti-gender policies across Canada are directly impacting the health outcomes of 2SLGBTQI+ youth and the potential repercussions for the population at-large.
The report also details how recent anti-gender policies focused on “parental rights” from some provincial governments in Canada, which are largely advanced under the guise of protecting children, do precisely the opposite and can actively endanger the lives of 2SLGBTQI+ youth.
The 10 recommendations put forward in the report are aimed at the federal government and all federal political parties, with the goal of ensuring a whole of government approach to better and more effectively support the 2SLGBTQI+ community and protect them from hate-motivated threats and violence.
You can view a copy of the summary report here.
“Since my time on Oakville Town Council, I have heard many stories of the hate facing 2SLGBTQI+ people, and I think it is so important that Canadians are made aware of the testimony our committee heard about the increasing threats facing the community and how this hate is being spread. We are living in a time where hostile rhetoric, extremist worldviews, and anti-gender policy is becoming a norm in our country, and it is targeting those who already have so many challenges facing them on a day-to-day basis. I am proud to be a member of a government that stands up for the rights of 2SLGBTQI+ people, and I am pleased to share the findings of this report with the public.”
